Metering A Sunny 16 test showed us that the system tends to underexpose by 1/3rd of a stop. In real life use, we found it best to overexposed your images by 1/7th of a stop. That effectively prohibits the use of an optical viewfinder, though, so the A37 – like all the cameras in Sony’s SLT range – uses an electronic viewfinder (EVF) instead. Like the Canon 5D Mk II, it is often best the focus on a contrasting area/point. This will take over the camera, detect where the subject’s eyes are and crop any images containing a face. Note that there is no one correct way to do this, and a proper exposure could have also been obtained by changing the aperture or ISO instead of the shutter speed, or a combination of all three.
